Can Coffee Help Manage Chronic Pain? Science Says Yes

What the Research Says
In one study, researchers looked at the caffeine consumption of 62 healthy men and women over seven days. Participants consumed caffeine from various sources, including coffee, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate, averaging about 170 mg of caffeine daily — roughly two cups of coffee. Afterward, they underwent pain-inducing tests in a lab setting. The results? Those who regularly consumed caffeine experienced significantly reduced pain sensitivity compared to non-caffeine consumers. This suggests that regular coffee drinkers may have a higher pain threshold.
But that’s not all. Another study found that a 200 mg caffeine tablet was an effective treatment for muscle pain. And if you’re a fan of post-workout coffee, you’re in luck. A study conducted at the University of Georgia found that consuming two cups of coffee can reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness by nearly half. So whether it’s muscle pain or everyday discomfort, caffeine seems to offer some relief.
Coffee and Sleep Deprivation: A Painful Combo
For those dealing with chronic pain, sleep can often be elusive. Unfortunately, lack of sleep makes pain even worse. Research has shown that sleep deprivation increases pain sensitivity. However, caffeine may come to the rescue again. In one study, sleep-deprived mice experienced a significant reduction in pain sensitivity when given caffeine, while well-rested mice showed no change. This suggests that caffeine may be especially effective in reducing pain when you’re running low on sleep.
