Is Your Pain Preventable? Understanding Range of Motion (R.O.M) and Its Role in Pain Relief

Have you ever wondered if the pain you experience in your daily life could be avoided? What if there was a way to prevent it before it even starts? For many, the answer lies in a simple but crucial concept: Range of Motion (R.O.M).

What is Range of Motion (R.O.M)?

Range of Motion refers to the full movement potential of a joint, usually its range of flexion and extension. In simple terms, it’s how far your joints and muscles can move in various directions without causing discomfort or strain.

When your R.O.M is limited in one area, your body tends to compensate for it by overworking other muscles and joints. While this may help you reach your immediate goal—like lifting something overhead or bending down—it often leads to long-term consequences like strain, tension, and even injury.

My Personal Experience with Limited R.O.M

Let me share my story: For a long time, I had limited R.O.M in my shoulder flexion (the movement that lets you raise your arm above your head). To compensate for this restriction, my back had to hyperextend just to reach a full overhead position. This constant compensation created tension and discomfort in my lower back.

The body is designed to adapt to limitations, but these adaptations aren’t always healthy. They often involve your muscles and joints working in unnatural ways, leading to pain and instability.

The Consequences of Poor R.O.M

Mobility expert Kelly Starrett describes these adaptations as “Open Circuit Faults.” This term refers to unstable positions that your body defaults to when it can’t reach its ideal movement pattern. According to Kelly, these faulty movement patterns and overtension account for a staggering 98% of movement dysfunction in the gym.

Think about that: 98% of the time, our pain and dysfunction are caused by issues that are entirely preventable!

How Open Circuit Faults Lead to Injury

When your body relies on these unstable positions, it’s only a matter of time before you experience injury. Muscles and joints that are forced to compensate become overworked, fatigued, and more prone to strain. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain, decreased performance, and a lower quality of life.

How to Identify and Improve Your R.O.M

So, how do you know if your pain is caused by limited R.O.M? The first step is to assess your movement patterns to identify where your limitations are. For example, my own restrictions were in shoulder flexion and internal rotation. Once you know where your body is lacking, you can work on it consistently until you start seeing improvements.

My Movement Assessment: Your Path to Pain-Free Living

I offer a detailed movement assessment that takes you through all the major movement patterns you use in everyday life. This assessment is designed to pinpoint the exact areas where you’re lacking R.O.M so we can address those limitations directly.

Here’s what the movement assessment can do for you:

  • Identify where your R.O.M limitations are holding you back.
  • Create a customized plan to improve those limitations.
  • Reduce pain by addressing the root cause instead of just the symptoms.
  • Enhance your overall mobility and performance in both daily life and workouts.

Improving your Range of Motion isn’t just about feeling better—it’s about preventing future injuries and optimizing how your body moves as a whole.

Take Control of Your Pain: Start Today

Pain doesn’t have to be a part of your everyday life. By addressing your R.O.M limitations, you can take control of your body’s movement patterns and unlock a new level of mobility, strength, and pain-free living.

If you’re ready to make a change, my movement assessment is the first step toward a healthier, more functional you. Let’s work together to improve your Range of Motion, eliminate those Open Circuit Faults, and create a more stable, pain-free future!
