The health system is pretty black and white. You’re either ‘Healthy’ or ‘Not Healthy’. There’s no in-between. It’s pretty similar with pain and injury. If you go to your doctor or the walk-in centre you are either injured or you’re ‘good to go’. If you go to them to get rid of pain however and there’s no obvious injury it’s different story.

When I was a teenager I struggled with chronic shoulder pain for years (Probably some form of tendonitis) from boxing. I went to A&E to get it looked at (I didn’t know where else to go then) and the women said to me…
‘I don’t know why your here’ …
I felt like saying ‘Because I’m in pain bitch’ but never did instead I left feeling stupid. Another time a few years later I went to the walk-in centre because once again I was having shoulder pain.
The woman told me to take my shirt off and because I managed to take my t-shirt off that somehow in her mind determined that I was not in pain…
If you do go to the doctors to get rid of pain and are successful in convincing the gatekeepers of pain treatment that they are in fact in pain will go through something along the lines of this –
GP Referral to an Orthopaedic doctor where you’ll probably have to wait on a waitlist. When you finally see the Orthopaedic doctor you’ll be told you’ll have to get imaging.
The imaging will show something that sounds like your life is over such as ‘Your spine is showing degeneration on the discs’ (This will also show on a healthy pain-free individual over 30 btw)
You’ll then be referred to an Orthopaedic surgeon or some other specialist after a long wait who then may want further imaging…
Before you know it, it’s been two years and the only progress you’ve made is the pain is 10x worse.
At the end of the day, the healthcare system is overwhelmed and they don’t have the time to fully assess every individual that comes through the door.
By the time they do get around to you it’s too late, you’ve already ended up injured or lost years of quality of living
